Lake Mungo Educational Tourism Activity

Homeland Spirit Package Included

Lake Mungo (All Mungo Immersions)

Led by: First Nations Guides

All Mungo Immersions will visit Mungo National Park. Built into their time at the National Park will be a combination of Ranger Guided activities with the National Parks staff, as well as cultural activities facilitated by Traditional Owners who travel to the park for the immersion. This differs from other Homelands and Outstations that Red Earth groups visit, as the group camp within a National Park and in a public campground.

Mungo Lunette Guided Tour

The Mungo Lunette Guided Tour is almost always run by Traditional Owner Tanya Charles. Formerly known as the ‘Walls of China’, the Lunette Guided Tour takes the group into the spectacular landscape where they will learn about the 40,000+ years of Aboriginal Cultural history that has taken place at this significant site. Regular tourists cannot access this part of the park without a ranger guiding them. Groups will learn about the significance of Mungo Man and Mungo Woman, witness the local wildlife such as birds, kangaroos and emus, and see the physical evidence of Australia’s oldest civilisation, including ancient fireplaces and remains. Participants are encouraged to learn about the history of Mungo prior to their immersion as this UNESCO World Heritage Site opens a window to Australia’s Aboriginal history and provides an example of how traditional lands are currently managed and protected. This incredibly sacred area is not just a tourist destination off the beaten track; it holds significant cultural and spiritual importance for our Traditional Owner partners, and groups must be respectful of this.
